This training is a school-based peer-mentoring initiative that aims to embrace our youth as valuable and primary resources in prevention and education. The goal is to have a selected group of students deliver experiential presentations to their feeder community schools to address current concerning trends of youth and their online use/presence.
No one understands the challenges that youth face better than youth themselves. We believe that youth-driven peer education will naturally increase participant’s accountability to the program as well as deepen their level of personal investment in the skills they learn.
Mentors will explore their individual as well as group values, practice their presentation skills, and develop interactivities for younger students. The mentors will help guide the elementary students by showing them how they can become active participants in a growing networked society. These skills when embraced at an early age have empirically shown to serve as a foundation for behaviour moving forward.
Specific focus is placed on developing digital citizenship skills, identifying and appropriately dealing with cyber-bullying, online etiquette, and how the internet and social media can be used appropriately and in a positive manner.
