Nearly 90% of today’s threats are communicated digitally; therefore, an accurate assessment of risk cannot be determined without assessing a threat maker’s digital behavioral baseline. This training will highlight worrisome behaviors frequently identified by SST Threat Analysts on platforms widely used in the state of Alabama, including TikTok, Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, Telegram, and more. You will also learn to navigate and assess the darker corners of the digital world, such as 4chan, 8kun, Watchpeopledie.tv, and many more. This training will introduce key concepts of radicalization and extremism, which will complement and be further explored during our TAASRO session, Radicalized Communities: Decoding Digital Leakage to Prevent Real-World Tragedy.

Digital Threat Assessment® (DTA®) training, developed by SST, imparts direct skills and tools for participants to identify digital leakage of an individual(s) on the pathway to violence. Through this interactive training, learn how to apply the skills and tools employed by SST’s Threat Analysts as we navigate case scenarios and the direct correlation and the worrisome behaviors we are identifying in districts throughout Alabama. While demonstrating an approach for responding to threat-related behaviors across the state, you will explore best practices for identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome digital leakage, how to verify whether the individual has access to the means to carry out a threat, and much more.

Whether you are a school administrator, educator, law enforcement professional, and/or part of a School Safety/Threat Assessment Team, through this training, you will be better equipped to reduce the potential for violence within your communities.

This training will include:

  • Applying the principles of Behavioral Threat Assessment to Digital Threat Assessment® (DTA®)
  • Identifying the digital behavioral baseline of individuals on the pathway to violence, best practices to assess and respond to worrisome behavior, and how to document your digital findings
  • Current best practices and online trends across Alabama and the Southern United States, including how to recognize concerning trends and ensure the safety, privacy, and mental well-being of those in our communities
  • Assessing the language of online threat-related behavior(s)
  • Exploring the latest methods that Subjects of Concerns use to communicate online, including searching within commonly used platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat
  • Utilizing Boolean operators, people search engines, and accessing cached data to better assess the digital behavioral baseline of a Subject of Concern
  • Validating the original source of images and videos
  • Law enforcement guides to request user-identifying information (emergency disclosure and preservation requests)
  • How to crowdsource localized and time-relevant social media posts from your community and area, including methods to gather public social media data to identify potential witnesses in a public act of violence
  • Utilizing social media platforms to strengthen your threat management and when attempting to locate a missing student/person
