Tumbler Ridge Traumatic Event

Our heartfelt thoughts are with the children, their families, and the community of Tumbler Ridge as they cope with this unimaginable and tragic event. All students and staff responded heroically by following previously practiced lockdown procedures.

Safer Schools Together (SST) is playing a key leadership role on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Child Care, supporting Peace River South School District 59 and the community through a compassionate, trauma-informed response and approach, further strengthened by subject-matter experts with direct experience in mass-casualty school events.

Our commitment will be to share any lessons learned from this tragic event through a school safety lens. This will be shared at an appropriate time to help guide the Province of British Columbia, school districts, first responders and their communities in best-practice responses to active-shooter incidents as part of their overall safety planning.

The extent of local, provincial, national, and international collaboration to deliver mental health and counselling supports to everyone affected by the tragedy is truly impressive, as was Peace River South School District 59’s leadership and the first responders’ swift response during this profoundly difficult and challenging time.

SST remains focused on supporting the district and community during recovery efforts. At this time, SST will not be responding to further media inquiries.

With kind regards,

Theresa Campbell
