Research suggests that approximately 1 in 5 young people experience a mental health disorder, including anxiety or depression. These challenges can significantly impact emotional regulation, academic performance, social relationships, and overall functioning within the school environment. Trauma-informed approaches help create supportive learning environments where students are better able to regulate, engage, and learn, rather than remain in a heightened state of stress or hyperarousal. Participants will learn how to recognize the thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical indicators commonly associated with anxiety and depression in students, helping to create connected climates and cultures within classrooms. Participants will review practical strategies and intervention tools that can be incorporated into classroom and school-based practices to better support youth experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression.

This training will focus on universal, tier 1 interventions and will primarily focus on classroom-based strategies that support all learners.

This training will include:

  • Reviewing the general considerations for a Trauma-Informed Classroom
  • Examining the impact of anxiety, depression, and trauma on brain development, learning, and emotional regulation.
  • Understanding the definitions for anxiety and depression, the most common presentations for youth, and the prevalence in student populations.
  • Identifying how anxiety and depression-related thoughts, feelings, physical symptoms, and behaviors may present within elementary and secondary school environments.
  • Exploring Tier 1 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) approaches when supporting elementary and secondary students experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and depression.
  • Participating in case scenario walkthroughs to strengthen understanding and practical application.
  • Examining special considerations for anxiety and depression presentations, such as public speaking, testing, and grief for secondary students, as well as parental accommodation and resiliency for elementary students, when supporting youth mental health and well-being.
