SURREY, BC – Safer Schools Together (SST) has provided its Tumbler Ridge recommendations to the Board of Education for School District No. 59 (Peace River South), to inform consideration on next steps for the secondary learning environment in Tumbler Ridge.
Since the tragedy at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, SST has been walking alongside the Tumbler Ridge community, in partnership with the province, providing trauma-informed support and helping facilitate connections to the broader network of care. As part of this work, SST has also helped facilitate the community consultation to inform the path forward.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone in Tumbler Ridge who took the time to share their experiences and perspectives during this time of profound loss. Prioritizing the voices of students, victims’ families, and staff most directly affected by the tragedy has been at the heart of this work,” said Theresa Campbell, CEO and founder of Safer Schools Together.
The themes and considerations emerging from the consultation, set out in the executive summary, reflect what the community shared, with particular weight given to the perspectives of those most directly affected. Decisions about next steps rest with the Board of Education and its provincial partners. The executive summary can be found on School District No. 59’s website here.
SST remains focused on supporting the district and community, and is grateful to the many local, provincial, and national partners contributing to ongoing mental health and recovery supports for everyone affected.
